"1917" sets high standards about cinematography. Director Sam Mendes achieved an amazing result and technically speaking I can't say anything of negative. Camera work is just amazing and the idea to adopt the one-shot like technique immersed me even more in the story. Some scenes are really tense and you cannot look away from the screen. This filming style is not easy at all to achieve, cuts are undetectable.
Photography is perfect and there are some spectacular shots, visually speaking is very clean, nothing to say about special effects or shootouts. There is the right dose of action, but the movie also take his time to deepen characters.
The story is nothing special and the movie on this aspect is not groundbreaking. Some scenes are completely unrealistic, soldier survive to a grenade that will cause the destruction of a trench, but when is stabbed he dies almost instantly. Screenwriters could come up with something better for sure. I appreciate the great effort made from a technical perspective, but a movie cannot be judged solely on the cinematography.
I gave 8 stars out of ten, because I personally like these kind of experiments, and I really hope that one day we can have a film that will be satisfying on every front.
